Bridgend Blue Bulls 56 Sharks 5

Despite missing six of the players who had played for the Wales Dragonhearts the previous week the Bridgend Blue Bulls still managed a convincing 56-5 victory over the Dinefwr Sharks at Porthcawl RFC.
The Blue Bulls scored 11 tries including four from skipper Lloyd O'Connor and a brace from wing Michael Daly who was playing his first game of Rugby for almost a year after undergoing major shoulder surgery.

It took Bridgend just two minutes to take the lead when Daly, who had marked his return by dying his hair blue sprinted away after a break from O'Connor to give the home side an early 4-0 lead.
The Sharks almost hit back through Steffan Davies but a great tackle from Christiaan Roets prevented the centre from scoring and from the turnover Bridgend attacked and a break from Kyle Coulter sent Daly over for his second.

A third try soon followed when great play from Nick Hopson and Tylon Mafi sent scrum half Shaun Owens over before O'Connor and former Whitehaven prop Williams Burns both scored late and on, and Jamie Murphy added three first half goals to give the former Wales Champions a 26-0 half time lead.

The Blue Bulls have had a habit of conceding tries early in the second half, however on this occasion there line held firm but the West Walians did get the first score with a well struck field goal (worth one point in Rugby League) from fullback Dave Norman.

Any chance of a Sharks comeback then evaporated after an excellent solo score from Gareth Howells put the Blue Bulls past 30 with Luke Hole converting.
Centres Lee Smith and Nick Hopson, both making there first starts for the Bulls then scored in quick succession to make the score 40-1 but then the best try of the game came when Sharks wing Chris Davies intercepted and ran 80 metres, he was finally run down by Mark Orpin but some great interplay between Davies, Dave Norman and Matt Pritchard finally saw Davies score for an excellent try.

But the final ten minutes of the match belonged to Blue Bulls skipper Lloyd O'Connor, the hooker scoring three tries in that period. The first came after good play from Tim Lunn and Nathan Strong but his third and fourth tries of the game were great solo efforts with the hooker twice running round a number of would-be tacklers and Luke Hole converted both to make the final score 56-5 to Bridgend.

For the Bulls Gareth Howells and Tylon Mafi were in excellent form while the Sharks found it almost impossible to tackle Christiaan Roets. Lloyd O'Connor showed all his skills while scoring four tries and helping to set up at least two more and Michael Daly had a great return from injury.

There were also excellent debuts for Nick Hopson and Williams Burns while Lee Smith shone after being given his first start in the centre. Nathan Hawkins also played well despite playing at fullback for the first time while wing Chris McGrath can feel hard done by having two tries disallowed.

The Sharks also had a number of good players but struggled after a suffering a number of early injuries. Dave Norman was in great form at fullback, Chris Davies and Dan Fox looked dangerous throughout while Matt Pritchard tackled brilliantly.

After the game Blue Bulls Team Manager Simon Green said

"we made a number of changes for the game against the Sharks and rested quite a few and those who came in were excellent. We now have a really tough job in picking the side to face Torfaen but its a great problem to have"
