The Bridgend Blue Bulls ran in 13 tries to record there biggest ever victory over the Cardiff Demons with Gareth David claiming a hat-trick for the second successive game. The Bulls took the lead in the opening minute when Gareth Howells crashed through the Demons defence before offloading to wing Chris McGrath who raced over in the corner.
That early score helped inspire Jon Purnells men to play some excellent Rugby League and soon after Gareth David broke through for a great solo try. Then a break from Pontycymmer teenager Rhys Hawkins resulted in David grabbing a second which he also converted to make it 14-0.
The Excellent David then broke through the Demons defence once again before putting in a great pass to Nathan Strong for Bridgend’s fourth with David again converting to make it 20-0.
Scrum half Shaun Owens then scored a great solo try before replacement prop Connor McDonald crashed over after another break from Howells. Then just before the break Owens claimed his second with David converting to make it 34-0 at half time.
Just two minutes into the second half wing Dave Norman intercepted a loose pass from Christopher Holcombe and raced 60 metres to the line with David adding the extras, then David claimed his second hat-trick of the season, Nathan Strong converting.
Great play by Bulls centre Andrew Fryer then saw Dan Smith score before a superb break from Tongan powerhouse Tylon Mafi resulted in Dave Norman claiming his second, with David converting both.
Bridgend captain Craig Fox then showed good speed for the Blue Bulls 12th before Dan Smith raced over for his second.
68 points down with 20 minutes to go the Demons were staring down the barrel and a cricket score looked likely but the capital city side rallied well and scored twice late on with James Thatcher and Mike Rowe both crossing the line, Thatcher also converting both to make the final score 68-12.
At times the Blue Bulls were excellent and looked a totally different side to the won well beaten away to the Cougars last month. Always in control the whole team played well and Gareth David and Shaun Owens again ran the show from half back while centres Gareth Howells and Andrew Fryer were again solid in both attack and defence. Wings Chair McGrath and Dave Norman always looked dangerous with Matthew Hutchings calling the shots well from fullback in his first start of the season.
All the forwards did well with Rhys Hawkins, Charles Stevenson, Tylon Mafi and Nathan Strong all excelling and taking the ball up well while Rhys Dowling was excellent in defence.
For the game the Blue Bulls also had one of there strongest ever benches with included strong runners Lee Sims, Dan Smith, Connor McDonald and Sean Haren, while player coach Jon Purnell took to the field for the first time in a year a week after celebrating his 39th birthday.
After the game Purnell said “we were excellent today, we attacked well, our markers were good and defence was excellent and we are improving with every game. We were disappointed to let in the two tries late on but overhaul the team were pretty damn good and I can find little fault”.
